Dear Sir.

A doubt occurs
Respecting the Correct Mode
of Spelling the name of
the parish of which you
are the incumbent. I
Shall feel much obliged
if you will inform me,
for the purposes of the
Ordnance Survey, whether
Dunino or Denino is the
proper Spelling.
In a list of parishes
lately received here from
the Sheriff Depute of
the Co.[County] Fife it is Spelled
Denino and I find this
is generally the Spelling
in all the published
accounts relating to the
Parish.

Dunino Manse, Aug 22nd 1853 [22 Aug 1853]

Dear Sir,
After inspecting the
parish registers I find the name of
this parish variously spelled at differ-
ent times:

In 1666 it is called Dinninou,
In 1697 it is called Dennino,
In 1650 it is called Dynnino,
In 1736 it is called Dununnow,
at present it is written Dunino or Denino.
I have heard the derivation of the name
to be, as you indicated in the note at the
end of your letter, the hill of young
women, but I am not aware of any
evidence to prove the correctness of this.
There are no remains of a convent
on the hill; but Several Stone Coffins
were found there Some years ago.
I know no means of ascertaining
what Mode of Spelling the name
is the most accurate.
