026 | A small village on the coast of the Firth of Forth and immediately adjoining the east end of the village of Earlsferry, and to appearance forming one village only, yet divided by the Ph. [Parish] Boundary. It consists of two parallel streets, one close by the line of High Water the other inland about 5 chains from it. between both are several small lanes or wynds, and all in part bounded on both sides by broken and unconnected rows of houses, from one to two storys high and all in good repair. from the middle of the main inland street a short street brances off along the public line of road towards Coupar. it is bounded partly on both sides by a row of dwelling houses of the former description. It is a burgh of barony holding off the proprietor Mr Baird-formerly it belonged to the Anstruthers of Elie House. Its inhabitants are chiefly fishermen with tradesmen & labourers. there are two cloth shops in it one Inn & 4 Public Houses bedsides several small grocers shops. It has a safe & convenient Harbour. also a Post Office Ph. [Parish] Church Ph [Parish] School & Female School. No Fairs or Markets are held in it. |
