026 | [situation] In the S. [South] Eastern portion of the Ph. [Parish] of Kilconquhar. A village connected with the west end of Elie. It consists of one street about 40 chains in length. the houses are from 1 to 2 stories in height having gardens attached, and occupied by Weavers, Colliers and fishermen. It was anciently a Royal Burgh and governed by a Provost and Bailies etc, but it along with the burghs of Falkland Newburgh and Auchtermuchty, some time prior to the Union were relieved from the burden as it was then esteemed of sending commissioners, whom they were obliged to pay to represent them in Parliament. Being thus by their own desire disfranchised as burgh. Its original Charter was destroyed by fire in Edinburgh & its date is not ascertained. A new charter was granted by James VI in 1589. "Earls-ferry a little fisher town, which is said Macduff Earl of Fife, got erected into a Royal Burgh, because the fishers here transported him over the Frith, whom he made his escape from Macbeth" See Sibbalds Hist.
