Alexander Finlayson Thomas Finwick John Bennit |
026 | [situation] At the S. [South] West end of Earlsferry Village. The ruins of an ancient chapel situates at the West end of the Village of Earlsferry. The wall are about 3 feet in height with the exception of one of its gables which stands its original height. A stone in it has the following inscription "Chapel built by McDuff Earl of Fife 1093". by whom it is said to have been erected as a token of gratitude for the kindness he received from the inhabitants and fishermen of Earlsferry, while flying from the vengance of Macbeth. The above date which was originally inscribed on a stone of the building had become almost illegible untill it was sometime ago renewed and cut afresh on another which was put into the wall in place of the ancient inscribed stone. Two old men in the neighbourhood have informed the field examiner that they remember seeing the original inscription. |

Ordnance Survey - Fife and Kinross counties
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the counties of Fife in the east of Scotland and Kinross in central Scotland. The boundaries of these counties were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
