031 | Close to the northern margin of the Water of Ore, on a small Knoll near the eastern corner of a flat piece of land until about seventy years ago a loch, are standing the ruins of Lochore Castle surrounded by a strong wall with port-holes at present much dilapidated. Fullarton in his Gazetteer says "there was until lately a considerable loch in this parish (Ballingry) called Loch Ore, from which a small stream Ore issues, but it has been in great part drained" (now wholly drained). Towards the eastern extremity of this loch was a small island upin which stood the remains of an ancient Castle supposed to have been founded in the reign of Malcolm III. Lochore Castle (in ruins) situation 1 7/8 Miles S.W. [South West] of South Bogside.
[Quotation] "This building consists of an old tower, and several lower houses. it was built by Duncan de Lochore, former proprietor of the estate, in the reign of Malcolm III: but the estate passing into the hands of the Wardlaws of Torry, it from them received considerable repairs; and the name of Robertus Wardlaw is upon the chief entry to the tower.
