011 | [situation] Within the demesne of Wemyss Hall. A middling sized hill situated a little to the North of Wemyss Hall. Its surface is wood and furze and arable. On its summit stands the ancient cross of Cupar bearing date 1683, it has been used as a Trig. [Trigonometrical] Station under the name of "Tarvit Hill Tower. It was carried there by the late Colonel Wemyss, when improvements were being made on the streets of Couper, i.e. about 36 years ago, and placed on a whinstone pedestal. It is a small round column surmounted by the town arms. (Colonel Wemyss was father of J.B. Wemyss Esq. the present proprietor of Wemyss Hall.) |
