009 | [situation] In the wall of Abdie Church (Remains of). The remains of Jugs formerly pendant to the old Ph. [Parish] Church of Abdie. the only remains at present is an iron staple fastened with lead into the front of the old parish church close by the entrance and about 3 1/2 feet from the ground pendant to this was an iron chain with a clasp collar at the opposite end of it. into this collar the neck of offending parties were fastened, to be Kept in durance during the period of their sentence at the opposite side of the same door. there was another Chain and Collar for the same purpose, one fell out and was lost or misslaid the other was taken out and removed to the town of Cupar where it is yet preserved. There is no local authority that can say by what authority these Jugs were used as a punishment. the given authorities say that it is supposed that they were used by ecclesiastical authorities of the church. |
