[Church] The ruins of an ancient Chapel on the farm of Ayton the side walls and both ends stand at their original height they are about 18 feet long by 11 feet broad and though roofless are partially protected by ivy the interior of the building has been used as a burying place by former proprietors of the estate of Ayton and down to the uncle of the present proprietor, the ground around it was also used as a burying ground but is now under cultivation. On the inside of one of gables is a tablet of stone indented in the wall on which is carved four shields with coats or arms and the date 1688. The arms of two of the shields are supposed to be those of the Aytons of Ayton the whole is so time-worn as to be now barely traceable in parts only. its date of erection is unknown as well as the date at which it became a ruin. It is said to have been a Roman Catholic place of worship. |

[Quotation] "About 200 yards west of the farm-steading of Ayton, and within a small clump of trees, are the ruins of an old chapel, 18 feet in length by 11 in breadth, with its burying ground, which appears to have been the burial place of the Aytons of Ayton.
