"Originally this parish formed part of the neighbouring
parish of Abdie there being a chapel within the burgh
dedicated to St Catharine besides the church of the
monastery of Lindores in the immediate neighbourhood."

The parish church is an old Popish chapel situated
within the town of Newburgh which in consequence
of a late thorough repair has been made a very convenient
place of worship. Old Stat.Acct. Vol. [Statistical Account Volume] 8 page 188. published 1793
