016 | [situation] 1 5/8 miles S.W. [Southwest] of Glenvale farm house. "Two large standing stones on the farm of Orwell standing E & W [East and West] of each other about 80 links apart. The Eastmost is about 9 feet and the other 7 feet high and each about 3 1/2 feet broad, there is no authenticated tradition in the district regarding them but Dr. McKelvie thinks they are the remains of a druidical temple. About 30 years ago stone Coffins were found between those two standing stones Mr Fowles Old Manse who then farmed the land on which they are situated states so, and further examination having been subsequently made nothing more has been found" [Note] Copied from Examiners Remarks. |
