[Craighall Castle (ruins of) continued.]

[Authorities] David Brown, Baron Baillie. Robert Bell, Craighall. William Wilson, Simonden. [situation] About 1¼ miles E.N.E. [East North East] from Cassindilly.

[remarks]....The whole of the under flat has been arched in the roof, in this flat are seen the remains of the oven, bricks forming which are to be found half burnt. The walls are between three and four feet thick, in them are seen tracings of staircases. Round the building were sixteen turrets only one of which is entire. Till about thirty years ago the building was entire to the tapestry on the walls, but a late factor demolished the north and greater part of north east sides for building purposes. In the South side a piece of Masonry has been built with 9 apertures, 7 of which have semicircular tops, one of these apparently a door. This addition extends the height of the Walls, and in it are placed the " Arms" presently used by the family with the words "Spero, Suspiro, donee" and the date 1697, regarding its use, architects can only form conjectures. Only one room is roofed and it is for the use of the Baron Bailie, in it are a few very fine geological specimens, a piece of the Mosaic jambs of the fire place of a room, as also pieces of the cornice in stucco. The ruins are shown to visitors. The present proprietor is George William Hope Esq. Craighall.
