012 | [Situation] On the margin of High Water mark and about 5 chains North of the Cathedral of St Andrews - A small cave cut in a precipitous rock at High water mark near the North end of Gregory's Lane. It is evidently artificial and consisted of two apartments which were neatly ornamented with sea shells though no portion of the ornament now remaining. It was made by the desire and at the expense of a lady Buchan, for the purpose of her sitting there to receive the cool and refreshing breezes of the sea and from whom the cave has derived its name. "In the rocks between the castle and the harbour is a cave called Lady Buchan's apparently chiefly artificial which is said to have been elegantly fitted up with Shell work by a lady of that name when residing at St Andrews about 80 years ago" - Leighton's Hist.
