| STONE COFFIN CONTAINING HUMAN REMAINS, BEAD ORNAMENTS AND AN URN FOUND HERE A.D. 1848 | 011.02 | In an arable field about half a mile to the west of (Thornhill) there was found about 1848, a stone coffin with human remains. It contained an urn of clay rudely ornamented. In this coffin alone were found ornaments of a jetblack substance resembling canal coal through which appear to have passed cords; the whole fixed to a ring 2½ inches in diameter. The appearance of the bones and ornaments seemed to indicate that the grave had been that of a female of rank. Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |
