This pillar was erected to the memory of Lord Melville, it is a model of one raised to the Emperor Trajan in Rome, It was commenced on the 20th. of April 1821 and was completed in 1828 at an expense of about £6000 which was contributed by individuals chiefly connected with the navy, over which Lord Melville had long presided, The height of the column including the pedestal is about 136 ft, [feet] its diameter diminishing from 12 feet 2 inches at the base to 10 feet 6 inches at its Apex, The Statue which Crowns its Summit is 14 feet in height, and was executed by Mr. Robert Forrest of Lanark, In the centre of the pillar there is a Spiral Stair of 192 Steps which leads to the top of the column, and from which a fine view can be obtained of the city, |
