[Situation] From Princes Street to High Street A wide Street leading from High Street ot Princes Street and passing over a lofty bridge, or viaduct, The street is well paved & clean &c. The houses are handsome and well constructed generally 3 stories high above the level of the Bridge but many of them are two or three stories more underneath being built by the side of the viaduct of North Bridge The apartments level with the Street are all shops in respectable retail trade also many of the upper storey are [----] & shops, This viaduct or bridge was commenced in 1764 over the [low] which was previously occupied by the north loch and was not completed untill 1772. It was erected for the purpose of opening up a communication from Old Town with the ground which was then intended as the site of the New Town. |
