002 | A large and most elegant building erected after a design by W.H. Playfair, and is reckoned the finest specimen of Grecian architecture in the City. The Northern front is adorned with a portico of Doric columns resting on an elevated basement, behind the pediment of which is a colossal Statue of Queen Victoria, in a sitting posture, one hand resting on a globe and the other holding a Sceptre. The Southern front has also a portico, and the other sides have rows of Doric Columns with small flanking porticos. It was founded in 1823 and altogether cost about £40000. The interior contains apartments for the Royal Society the Royal Institution for the encouragement of the fine arts, and the Board of Trustees for manufactures and Fisheries at whose joint expense it was erected. The rooms contains ancient and modern paintings, Antique cats and vases and casts of all the celebrated pieces of sculpture etc |
