This square was one of the first places to be erected in the New Town, It was finished and inhabited about the year 1778 its dimensions are about 520 feet by 510, when first built the houses were of a uniform height and all occupied as private dwellings, but of late years they have been much altered both exteriorly and interiorly, and a few of them appropriated as banks (viz) [namely] The National The British Linen The Royal, and Western, beside some Druggist, Cabenet and Drapers shops. The houses varies from 3 to 4 stories high exclusive of underground flats and are principally occupied by professional Gentlemen etc. In this square is a small inclosed portion of well ornamented pleasure ground, On the centre of which stands Melvilles Monument which adds much to the beauty of the place, |
