002 | [Situation] E.S.E [East South East] of Kirkgate. A large and tastefully built edifice of the Gothic Style of architecture. The east and west ends of which were rebuilt in 1847. The interior is most handsomely fitted up with galleries etc and contains sittings for 1200 persons. The North and South Sides of this edifice and the pillars in the interior are the only remains of the old building which was called St. Marys prior to the year 1609 when it was declared by the authority of parliament to be the parish church of South Leith, in place of that of Restalrig. "The precise date of the erection of the present church of south Leith cannot be ascertained, but is probable that it was built about the year 1490. In a Charter of James lll [3rd] dated 1490, his majesty confirms a charter which one Peter Falconer had granted to a Chaplain and his successors, for celebrating divine worship at the altar of St Peter in the church at Leith, which is therein called a "New Church" dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The central part and middle aisles of the present church, with the steeple, appear to have constituted the original erection, while the side buildings seem to have been afterwards added. The choir at the east end was demolished at the Reformation". see Statistical [Account] of the Co. [County] page 777. |
