[Situation] On the eastern Side of the Co. [County] of Edinburgh. A small parish in the County of Edinburgh being only about 2 miles Square lying on the banks of the North and South Esk Rivers; bounded on the north by Newton and InveresK Parishes; on the east by InveresK and Cranston; on the south and west by Newbattle and Lasswade; and on the west by Lasswade and Newton. Its greatest length is 3 1/2 miles; greatest breadth 2 1/4 miles. The Surface is greatly undulated, but in no quarter rises into hills; indeed the whole might be considered a plain, did not the steep banks of the river give it an uneven and broKen appearance. It contains the populous and thriving town of DalKeith (for which See description). Adjoining the town is DalKeith House, the princely residence of the Duke of Buccleuch, situated in a splendid parK of about 800 acres, embosomed amongst fine old wood. The Rivers North & South Esk unite in this park and after flowing for about 2 1/2 miles through a rich pastoral district falls into the Firth of Forth at Musselburgh. This parish is in the Synod of Lothian & Tweeddale and is the seat of a presbytery. Patron, the Duke of Buccleuch. |
