Parish of Stow [Page] 29
[Note] Ext: [Extract] from Stat: [Statistical] Account of Stow.
There are remains of ancient Roman camps on the farms of Muirhouse, Stagehall Craigend Watherston, Nethershiels, Pirntaiton and Mawtree &c [etc], they vary in Size from half an acre as at Nethershiels to two acres as at Muirhouse & Craigend , the larger ones are circular while the others are oval -
[Note] Note.- The above Camp as well as those in pages 19 and 26 although Called "Roman Camps" are written in each case "Camp" only on Plan as the original Shape or construction of these Cannot now be Seen owing to their being so much defaced and there is not sufficient information to ascertain their Origin. It is more probable that they were British "Camps" or Hill Forts than that of "Roman Camps" This is the opinion of Captn [Captain] James R. E. [Royal Engineer] who examined them on the ground.

Ordnance Survey - Midlothian county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Midlothian, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
