Parish of Lasswade
Hawthornden
[Description continued] Prince Charles Edward Stuart during his campaign in 1745 and a pair of Antique shoes and a silk dress of Annabella Drummond, Queen of Robert the 3rd one of the branches of this ancient family. Under the Mansion several curious caves have been cut from the rock. The entrance is by a door on the south side which leads to The Kings Gallery. The first cave is called the Kings Bedchamber, further on is the Well already mentioned, ascending a few steps is an apartment denominated the Kings Guard Room, and on the opposite side is the King Dining Room - The above is an Abridged Ext [Extract] from McDowall's "New Guide to Roslin & Hawthornden". See Form 136 page The modern building is a plain two story [storey] Mansion House the property & residence of Sir James Walker Drummond Bart. [Baronet] of Hawthornden. "In the upper storey of the building there is now growing a Sycamore tree of a considerable size". Gross's Antiquities. "At Hawthornden there remains a fragment of an old fortalice or Castle of unknown antiquity.
