012 | This small ancient fortalice crowns the lofty projecting summit of a rugged rock. overhanging the River North Esk, about one mile (East North East) from the village of Roslin. This place is rendered interesting as having been the seat of Drummond the poet & historian, (born here in 1585 and died in 1649) who did much for the improvement and protection of the building, In front of the house stands a tree of immense size, under which it is said Drummond the poet was sitting when Ben Johnson (a celebrated English poet) arrived upon a visit from London to him. This building like most of the ancient Scottish Mansions consists of a square vaulted tower with walls of immense thickness calculated to serve as an asylum or temporary retreat from the depradation of civil insurrections or foreign invasions, On the upper story of which a sycamore tree of considerable size is now shooting forth its branches The gate of entrance is of more modern erection than the tower tho' probably older than the new dwelling house, At what period or by whom the tower was erected is uncertain, the first mention of it on record is in a charter of the year 1433 but in all probability it is of much older date, Passing through this doorway over which are still the Armorial bearings the Drummond family we enter the court yard occupied on one side by the modern part of the building, and on the other, are the remains of the ancient tower. In the centre of the court yard is a deep well, which formerly served as an entrance to the caverns below. In the interior of the house are shown an ancient large two handed broad sword, & cane said to have belonged to Robert the Bruce a dress worn by Prince Charles Stuart during his Scottish campaign in 1745, and a pair of antique shoes & a silk dress of Annabella Drummond Queen of Robert the 3d. one of the former branches of this ancient family From the windows the prospect is rendered uncommonly pleasing by the finely wooded cliffs and the sound of the murmuring stream rushing through the deep rocky glen below. Under the mansion several curious caves have been scoped out of the solid rock |
