012 | A streamlet having its sources on the farms of "Bavelaw" and "Logan House" in the bosom of the "Pentland Hills" and after meandering through a wild and tolerably picturesque valley runs into the Edinburgh Water Company's Reservoir of which it is the mean, and many say only, channel of supply. - after leaving the reservoir it passes through a highly cultivated and interesting country, it forms the boundary for a short distance between the parishes of Penicuik and Glencross taking the name of "Glencross Burn", and joins the River Esk near Old Woodhouselee. - it is said that the scenes pctured by Allen Ramsay in his pastoral poem "The Gentle Shepherd" were suggested by the scenery lying upon this streamlet, in its course through the valley above Logan House and others state (and with more probability) that the scenes were laid on the Esk. |
