In the Northern portion of the parish of West Calder. | A considerable village in the parish of West Calder, and about 16 miles west of Edinburgh, on the road leading from Edinburgh to Ayr & Lanark. It consists of about 90 houses, some of which are of modern erection, 2 stories high, and in good repair, but a numbe[r] of them are of ancient date, and in a ruinous condition. It contains three churches. - the Established Church, with manse and glebe, the Free Church, and the United Presbyterian, or Burgher Church. There is also a Parish School with house and garden attached, and a private seminary, unendowed Contind. P 12 |
