[Situation] Situated between Canongate and North back of Canongate Near Watergate. The site of St Thomas' Hospital and Chapel, Pointed out by Mr Thomson and others. was erected or founded in 1541 by George Creichtoun Bishop of DunKeld out of the love to God for the augmentation of his worship and for the prosperity and welfare of James V of Scotland and successors and for the founder's spiritual welfare. relations. and Successors, The charter [allows] two Chaplains twenty four marks, and forty shillings to the Canons of Holyrood. [The] former to officiate regularly in the Chapel, and the latter to celebrate the founders death annually. with high Mass and Singing Placebo and Dirge, also the Charter of foundation [contains] divers Rules &c for the said Chaplains and Alms-men for which see Maitlands history of Edinburgh This Chapel and Alms house with their incomes. was on the 31st March. anno 1617. disposed of to the Magistrates and council men of Canongate with the consent of David Creighton of Lugton to be and remain [---] hospital for the poor of Canongate with the presentation thereto invested in the baliffs and Council. On [the] 30th of January 1634. the Magistrate and council disposed of it, to the Church Session, of the Church of Holyrood in whose possession it Remained. until the year 1768. when it was removed and houses erected on its site, |
