"The magistrates of Edinburgh in 1706 resigned their superiority over
Queensberry House and the neighbouring ground and by a new
gift of his estates, which Duke James obtained that
year from Queen Anne this part of the Canongate was joined
to the DuKedom of Queensberry, lordship of Drumlanrig, and
regality of New Dalgarnock in Dumfries-shire to which County
the property has ever since belonged though situated fifty miles
from it."
