[Situation] On South side of Canongate. A large house and some smaller ones used since 1823 as a house of refuge, it is the property of the Board of Ordnance, and is rented by the directors of the above Institution for £70 annually. At present it accommodates 420 inmates, these consist of persons in a state of temporary destitution, some under moral restraint and others totally destitute the last mentioned of these are paid for by the parishes to which they belong, the other persons are supported by benevolent contributions and at rates in proportion to their means. There are two rooms fitted up with wooden beds for the night homeless. one each for male and female, capable of affording lodgings from about 90 to 100 persons, during the year 1849 the Institution gave relief to 19234 cases of distress The Soup Kitchen, [continued on page 120] |

"The magistrates of Edinburgh in 1706 resigned their superiority over
Queensberry House and the neighbouring ground and by a new
gift of his estates, which Duke James obtained that
year from Queen Anne this part of the Canongate was joined
to the DuKedom of Queensberry, lordship of Drumlanrig, and
regality of New Dalgarnock in Dumfries-shire to which County
the property has ever since belonged though situated fifty miles
from it."
