[Situation] North side of Canongate (Enclosed.) A large square building [erected] by voluntary contribution about [---] years ago as an Asylum for [females] who have gone astray from the [path] of virtue, when they express a desire [sincerely] of reformation, it is three stories high and in good repair, A society called the Edinburgh Philanthropic was established in 1797 for this purpose. In a few years it was [found] necessary to enlarge the sphere of this important charity and under the new designation of the society for the support of the Magdalene Asylum, they opened the present one in the Canongate A.D 1807 under the patronage of the late George IV and is capable of containing about 60 inmates, Besides religious instructions amd moral superintendence, suitable work is given [continued on page 115] |
