[Situation] At East side of Abbey Hill nearly opposite Abbey Court House The site of this house was pointed out by Mr Borthwick and others, who state, that it [stands] on or about the East end of Abbey, opposite the Abbey Court House, The spot is [now] occupied by a modern house The garden which was attached to the Abbot's dwelling, is now the north garden of the Palace and more recently was used by students of Botany as a Phisic Garden, Robert Chambers says in his Reckiana that "Robert Ballantyne Abbot of Holyrood monastery who built the old Bridge of Leith and was in his day a very distinguished person, had his great [house] or lodgings with the yard thereof, lying beside the Port of Holyrood house on the north side of the [street"] |

Robert Ballantyne, Abbot of
Holyrood Monastery, who built
the old bridge of Leith and was in his day a very distinguished
person had a house described as his great house or lodging
with the yard thereof lying beside the port of Holyroodhouse
on the north side of the street. Charter 1494 quoted in. "A
perfect Inventor of pious donations &c, by Robert Mylne MS. [Manuscript]
Advocates Library. The spot is now occupied by a modern
building; while the garden has since been described as the north
garden of the palace, and more recently used as a physic garden
for the use of students of botany. At the north-west corner of this
garden, and bordering upon the line of street Called the Abbeyhill
is a small antique building of irregular shape which is popularly
believed to have been used as a bathing house of Queen Mary.
