Portions of the Characters on this Monument have more Recently been satisfactorily deciphered, which has Consequently overturned the theory of its Danish origin and which moreover establishes the date to be during the Heptarchy or at least before the language of the Anglo-Saxons had undergone any violent Change. The only other existing Antiquity is Comlongon Castle about 1 3/4 mile N.N.W. [North North West] from Ruthwell village. It was erected by Murray of CocKpool ancestor of Sir John Murray who in 1624 was created Earl of Annandale by James VI, It is a Strong and lofty pile of Quadrangular building, measures 60 feet along each Side and is 90 feet high with battlements and portholes in the walls. The Walls are of sufficient thickness, as to bear imperforation of small apartments. This Stronghold seems not to have been Occupied since 1765, A New Roof was put upon it at the Commencement of this Century And otherwise repaired, the inside however is now ruinous. The Site of CocKpool Castle 1/2 mile South from Comlongon is pointed out. It was Also the Seat of the family of Murray of CocKpool. Considerable remains were extant a Dozen of years Ago |
