009 | [Situation] To the S.W. [South West] of Newton Fell on the Spa Well Burn. This Well or Spring was discovered by a farmer named John Williamson in the Year 1748. The Spring is in the fissure of a Rock which is rudely built over in the shape of a vault, there is a Stone in the centre of the arched roof on which is the Armorial Bearing of the Douglas's (The Bloody Heart) it is dated 1754 and the initials C. D. are likewise on the Stone. The building is nearly buried under the debris from the Scars of shale & Conglomerate by which it is completely surrounded. Fossil remains have been found in the Scaurs, Sulphuret of Iron or pyrites abounds in the debris. Hence the elements of the sulphate of Alumina & sulphate of Iron entering into the constitution of the Chalybeate. |
