042; 050 | A river which takes its rise in a place called the Marquis of Annandales beef stand( otherwise called the Devils beef tub) in the Parish of Moffat, on the border of Tweeddale, and runs southward through that District of Dumfries-shire to which it gives its name. In its course it receives several tributary streams; its banks are highly fertile and armamented, and its beautiful meanderings add much to the romantic appearance of the surrounding scenery. It discharges itself into the Solway Firth, about 2 miles below Annan after a course of nearly 30 miles |
