from William the Lion in 1183 on the occasion of his marriage with the bastard daughter of that monarch. It was burnt in 1592 or 1600, the day subsequent to the Battle of Dryfesands by the Johnstones of Annandale on account of the Maxwells having taken refuge therein and their refusal to surrender to the victors. Near the site of this church and also in the Burgh is a well also consecrated to St. Mary Magdalene, the water of which doubtlessly the [quack?] specific of the Monks of Gysburn.
