055 | A large building 3 & 4 Storeys high built of red sandstone built about 10 years ago. The fund appropriated to the building of this institution was a bequest of upwards of £100,000 by the late Dr. [Doctor] Crichton of Friars Carse. The institution was originally designed to be a university. It is a large & commodious Asylum for lunatics. It is incorporated a few years since by act of parliament. The building to which the above name particularly applies is lately (since the completion of the Southern counties Asylum) appropriated to patients who pay for their accommodation. Rates of board paid varies from £30 to £350 per annum. The affairs are managed by Trustees and a a board of Directors. The resident officers are a Treasurer a resident Physician, a matron, a medical assistant, & a [house] Steward. This department is capable of accommodating 120 patients. It is at present full. |
