055 | The remains of a roman Camp Situated on the farms of High Kelton and Trohoughton its Shape is oval, or more of a Square with rounded Corners, but now much defaced So as to make it difficult to determine what was formerly the exact shape of its outlines, it is part planted with wood and part under Cultivation, it is Surrounded with a rampart of earth and Outside of it a fosse both much dilapidated, outside of this latter on the north side is traceable a small fragment of an-other rampart - the remainder of this latter being level'd away and plow'd over. J. Carruthers farmer of Trohoughton says that about 40 years ago that both ramparts were complete with a deep fosse, between, and the above With W.. Martin - farmer of Boreland adjoining it, says that It has been always supposed to have been first constructed by the Romans, and in Connection with an other Roman Camp on the Wardaw Hill near Carlaverock Castle - held by them as Military Stations - Turn over |
