057 | [Situation] In N.Wn. [North Western] Ph. [Parish] district. About 2½ miles North from Annan -- Is a rather picturesque looking village situated on the Western bank of the River Annan, the houses are mostly of one stor [storey] high and regularly built the streets being wide an [and] the exterior of the houses which are annually white wash [washed] give the village a very clean and pleasing app [appearance]. The population in 1857 amounted to 357, the most pa [part] are employed in agricultural labour. The parish was disjoined from the conterminous parishes in 1853 by the court of Teinds, and the Act 7 & 8 Vict. [Victoria] Population of the parish at the date of disjunction 1010. It is a Quoad Sacra Parish. |
