062 | [Situation] ½ mile South from Hayknowes This is the Site, and all that now remains, of Newbie Castle once the stronghold & Residence of the Marquises of Annandale All that now remains is a Small portion of Masonry - part of the Wall - which rests on a Small elevation in the present stackyard. It was totally destroyed about the year 1816 when the present Farm steading was erected, chiefly from the Stones taken from the old walls of the Castle This Castle is said to have been Surrounded by a Moat with a drawbridge across, but there is no remains of a moat at the presant time. |
