| PARISH OF BOURTIE | Continued [from p.1] | and has accommodation for about 200 hearers. There is a portion of a sculptured standing stone built into the south wall of the church and measures about 2½ feet in length by about 1 foot in breadth. The school was erected in 1863, and is the only one in the Parish. Situated about three quarters of a mile west from the church, there stood in 1833 a low, sandy, conical tumulus of aqueous formation, and on being opened was found to contain charred bones and pieces of pottery, and a little west from the church there still exists the remains of a Druidical Circle, consisting of four huge unhewn stones. Near to the farm steading of Shelden there is another Druidical Temple in a considerable state of preservation consisting of seven huge stones. Situated near to the public road leading from Old Meldrum to Inverurie, but in the Parish of Bourtie stands "Barra Castle", in a state of good preservation. It has been converted into a farm dwelling. The exact date of this building cannot be discovered, but judging from the style of architecture, I would feel inclined to assign it a place among the Scottish Castles of the 13 Century; the Central building on a recess on the chimney bears the date of 1614. 1618.
