075 | A fine building of the Elizabethan style of Architecture, designed by Messrs Matthew and Mackenzie architects, containing accommodation for about 400 inmates, erected in 1849. at an expense of £9,300. The inmates are divided into three classes in nearly equal proportions, viz: [videlicet] 1st. aged and infirm, 2nd. Dissolute or able bodied, 3rd. children. Besides these numbers, there is accommodation in the probationary wards for 12, in the infirmary for 24, and in the maternity wards for 12. On the righthand side of the gateway are the porter's day and bedrooms with proper access to the gateway and commanding the private door for the application of paupers for admission. On entering which there is a waiting hall, a searching room, bath room, and fumigating closet, As soon as paupers are admitted, they are placed in the probationary wards set apart for their sex. until examined by the medical officer. After which they are thoroughly cleansed, and clothed in the Workhouse dress, their own cloths purified, and deposited in a place |
