075 | A plain building on the north west corner of Castle Street the entrance to which is in the west end from the lane called Huxter Row. the ground floor is let for shops. The first floor contains a Council Chamber, with apartments for the City Chamberlain and his Clerk, also a large room where the Police and Baillie Courts are held. Above is the Town Hall a beautiful room adorned with many portraits by celebrated painters, from the roof are suspended three magnificient diamond cut crystal lustres, the Town Clerks office is also on this floor, above this there is a miserable attic dignified by the name of the Town's Armoury Comprising about 300 stand of old fashioned Muskets and other warlike apparatus. The Town House has undergone many alterations and improvements since it was originally erected. In the Year 1670 the present Court room was fitted up and a part of the front was Modernised and in 1739 an addition of 30 feet was made to the west end of the building for a staircase, the town hall was projected about 1750 and the whole front wall of the edifice made uniform and of the same height -- over the archway which leads from Castle Street into Lodge walk there is a fireproof safe Called the Charter room which Contains the Charters granted at various periods to the town for its loyalty etc. it is entered from the Town Hall. |
