When viewing records, you can use features in the image viewer to change how the record is displayed.
You can see these by selecting ‘Image controls’ at the top of the image viewer.
Image viewer features
Zoom in
This magnifies the image. This is a useful tool in particular for reading older records such as census records.
Zoom out
This icon will return an image back to its original size on screen. You can zoom out further than the image’s original size to make it smaller on the page.
Contrast
This allows you to adjust the contrast of the image by sliding the bar from left to right.
Brightness
This allows you to brighten or darken the image by sliding the bar from left to right.
Rotate
This rotates the image 90 degrees clockwise. Select it again to rotate the image further.
Fit height
This icon will fit the image to the height of the online viewer, making it fit within the box vertically.
Fit width
This icon will stretch the image to fit the width of the online viewer, making it fit within the box horizontally.
Crop
After selecting ‘Crop’, use your mouse to select the area you want to crop, then select ‘Apply’. To return from the cropped view, select back in your browser.
Invert
Select this icon to make the image colours swap, so light colours appear dark, and dark colours appear light. To return to the original image, select 'Invert' again.
New window
Use this to view single images in a new browser window or tab. You can then view the image in your browser and save it to your device.
Full screen
Select this icon to display the image as full screen size on your computer or mobile device. To return to the normal size image, click the 'full screen' icon again.
