Answers: William Kay made the pilgrimage because his child (bairne) was sick and he left behind a string from the child's apron.

The said W[illia]m kay co[m]-
peirit p[er]sonallie & confessit he passit to the chryst[is] woll
for ane bairne of his awin callit Jo[hn]ne kay th[a]t was seik
& th[a]t he twik w[i]t[h] him ane appr[o]un string of the bairn[is]
& that he past about the Woll & prayit to chryst[is] son-
day to help his bairne & brocht hame the walt[ir] of the
said Woll and gaif to the bairne to drink & left the
bairn[is] apprun string at the Woll behind him
