Poser 389 – poll tax for Largs parish, Ayrshire, 1698

This poser is the first of two taken from the poll tax records and relates to the parish of Largs in Ayrshire (Crown copyright, National Records of Scotland, E70/1/2, page 1). It dates from 22 November 1698.

The poll tax was collected to pay off the debts and arrears of the army and navy in 1694, 1695 and twice in 1698. Payment was graduated at the rate of 6 shillings and upwards according to rank and means. The poor and children under 16 were exempt.
