In this poser, taken from Circuit Court Minute Books of the High Court of Justiciary, and dates to 1683 (Crown copyright, National Records of Scotland, JC10/3, page 95), we asked what had John done and how was he to make amends.

Answer: John had uttered some uncomplimentary words about the Minister and was ordered to apologise in front of the congregation and to beg the Minister's pardon. He was to pay £30 [probably Scots] for expenses and to find caution [security] that he would do all this.
