In this poser, taken from the heritors' minutes for Kirkliston parish in 1698 (National Records of Scotland, HR770/1, page 30), we asked which four unfortunate people were allowed permission to beg in the parish.

Answer: The four allowed to beg were John Young in Humbie (allowed a badge) and the three orphans of James Marshil (liberty to beg).
