SCOTTISH CABINET : 2ND ADMINISTRATION : DEPUTY FIRST MINISTER

The position of Deputy First Minister was established following devolution of powers to the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and the creation of the Scottish Executive. The Deputy First Minister is appointed by the First Minister and is a member of the Scottish Cabinet. The post-holder deputises for the First Minister in periods of absence or overseas visits, including answering to the Scottish Parliament at First Minister's Questions. The 2nd Administration refers to the Labour/Liberal Democrat coalition Scottish Executive which was elected at the second Scottish Parliament election on 1 May 2003.
