Napier Commission - Ross and Cromarty counties
The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Condition of Crofters and Cottars in the Highlands and Islands was appointed in 1883. It was chaired by Lord Napier and Ettrick and is more commonly known as the Napier Commission. The commission gathered evidence including returns from proprietors and factors regarding crofters and cottars living on estates in the Highlands and Islands. The records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Napier Commission records for the counties of Ross and Cromarty, which were in the north of Scotland. The counties were united in 1891 to form the combined county of Ross and Cromarty.
