Newton Mearns - Mearns Associate, United Presbyterian kirk session

A secession church court. The church was built at Newton Mearns in 1743, after the establishment of a preaching ministry of the Associate Presbytery in the parishes of Mearns, Eaglesham and Neilston during the preceding five years. The first minister was ordained and inducted in 1746. After considerable division and a lawsuit the congregation became Antiburgher in 1753, and those dissenting joined the Burgher congregation of Burntshields. The charge passed successively to the United Secession and United Presbyterian Churches and then to the United Free Church in 1900. After the union with the Church of Scotland it became known as Newton Mearns.
