Ayton United Presbyterian kirk session
A secession church court. It began as Ayton Summerhill Burgher Church, in the Burgher Presbytery of Edinburgh in 1777. It became a United Presbyterian parish in 1847. Much of the congregation later came from the village of Burnmouth, which by the 1880s was developing and wishing to establish an independent charge. This led to a dispute between Ayton and the United Presbyterian presbytery of Duns and for a time the possibility of Ayton joining the Free Church was under consideration. Eventually it united with its former Antiburgher counterpart, Ayton Springbank United Presbyterian, in 1893 as Ayton United Presbyterian. Ayton passed successively to the United Free Church (in 1900) and the Church of Scotland (in 1929), but was almost immediately reduced in status in 1930 and united with Ayton Old as Ayton in 1934.
