Aberdeen - Nether Kirkgate Burgher kirk session
A secession church court. It began as Aberdeen - Nether Kirkgate (Burgher) Church in a patronage dispute following the death of a minister of the East parish of the city in 1756. In 1758 the first minister of a secession congregation, the oldest in Aberdeen, was ordained. A new church was built in the 1770s. The controversy between the adherents of the Old and New Lights split the congregation and in 1801 led to what became a leading case in the adjudication of church property. The Old Light party, who did not include the minister, were successful and applied for sermon to the Original Burgher Presbytery. This congregation joined the Church of Scotland in 1839, the Free Church in 1843 (as Aberdeen Melville), the United Free Church in 1900, and finally the Church of Scotland in 1929.
