In this poser, taken from a register of baptisms within a volume of kirk session records for the parish of Rutherglen (National Records of Scotland, CH2/315/1, page 111), we asked you which of the children in the register of baptisms for Rutherglen had a fairy godfather.
Answer: John Bowman had a fairy godfather. His baptism was witnessed by John Fairrie. The surname Fairrie (or Fairie, or Fairy) was a common name in early modern Rutherglen. By the twentieth century the surname was usually rendered Farry or Ferry.
